Hale Kala National Park is a visual reminder of a volcano which was once very active. With vibrant shades of yellow, red, orange, pink, gray and black, you will note the traces of a time when hot ash and lava did flow in abundance and see the volcanic rocks which once cocooned this mammoth area.
Geologists state that the Hawaiian Islands are actually situated at the core of what they deem the Pacific Plate, which covers the inner earth. They describe this as a shell which has been cracked and now travels northward at approximately seven centimeters annually.
Geologists also state that the weak areas found through the earths' center invite the magna swell that slowly pushes to the earth's surface to create the many volcanic islands like Maui. At Hale Kala National Park you will find a stunning array of volcanic rocks, serene mountain streams, tranquil rock pools and the assortment of beautifully colored tropical birds. Here you will gaze in awe at the majestic mountains time and nature has created.
Your camera will snap busily as you delight in the varied species of birds such as the golden plover, seen from September to May. These avian friends are famous for their migratory flights to Alaska and back. You may also glimpse the apapane, Iiwi, amakihi and the nene birds which are native to Hawaii only.
The Iiwi is one of the most beautiful birds you may ever witness in person, with its curved beak, scarlet body, and black wings and tail. Your photos will be postcard-worthy, and you will likely be delighted when you see the many native plants Hawaii has to offer.
