Pump Some Iron on the Big Island

If you are a person who might enjoy being a spectator from every walk of life and on many levels of athletic ability, then be sure to visit the Big Island when the annual Ironman Triathlon World Championships is taking place in Kona.

Normally the Ironman is an October event, and the date of each annual race is published on the Ironman website more than a year in advance. You will need all of that time to ensure you find a place to stay as the Ironman is one of the biggest endurance events in the world and attracts thousands of athletes, volunteers, spectators, and news media personnel from around the globe.

Thirty years ago, Kona was a quiet, unassuming fishing village that saw little excitement and was probably one of the Big Island's best kept secrets. It is called the marlin fishing capital of the world, and that was the one big claim to fame that Kona used to boast.

Now a major cruise ship port of call, Kona boasts the Ironman Triathlon as one of the major world-wide sporting events in the world. The Ironman itself comprises three events that are all done one after the other in the same day - a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a full 26.2-mile marathon.

Thousands of spectators are up at dawn to watch one of the most spectacular sights in sports. The mass swim kicks off the Hawaii Ironman in Kona. The all-day event is full of drama, heartache, and joy and might well be the most moving event you ever witness, as ordinary people try and accomplish something amazing. The most unique feature of the event is that "ordinary" participants are able to compete against some of the most accomplished pro triathletes in the world.

If you want to be even more involved on your Ironman holiday to Kona, you can offer your services as a volunteer and be up close and personal to all the action. You might be a volunteer on a course water-station, at the finish line, or if you are qualified as a doctor or nurse, might find yourself working in the medical tent.

Regardless, for something totally unique in a fabulous setting, visit Kona on the Big Island in October and be part of something special.
