So here's the skinny, if you've decided that Breckenridge is your destination for Spring Break then make plans now! Accommodations fill up fast. You can actually save money on splitting the cost of a vacation rental. For instance, when you consider that a top rate rental can cost up to $1200 per night, it sounds way above a college student's credit line, but split that by 25 and the $48 doesn't sound so bad considering all the amenities. For example they can include 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, your own fireplace and hot tub, washer/dryer and full kitchen , not to mention the ease in chaperoning a group (if needed) versus hotel rooms. There's a good choice of rental properties in the area offering a range of amenities and distance from the activities. You should be able to find one in your price range. Sorry dude, you'll be paying top rate because it's their peak season.
One good thing though, you do not need a vehicle; Summit County has a great free transportation system that operates from 6:30am to 12am. Even if you arrive by airplane in Denver, car rental fees can be avoided by scheduling a ride with the Colorado Mountain Express. The CME Destinations West has it graphed out on the cost of using the shuttle service verses a car rental with consideration of the amount in your group. One hint: save $28 each way by taking the shuttle to Frisco and then get on the Free Ride bus to ride into Breckenridge.
Ideally, look for a roof over your head on the Free Ride route in town, because you know how hard it is to get a whole herd to go in the same direction. Maybe, you need the same color of hats too! There are lots of shops along Main Street that will cater to you. Parking is at a premium in town, so most people use a parking lot and catch the Free Ride or hike it.
For some of you, an altitude adjustment may be needed after you arrive. No, not your 'tude dude, I'm talking ear poppin' heights here (12,998 ft at the summit and 9,600 ft at the base). Be sure and drink plenty of water while you take it easy scoping out what's in town for night life while you adjust. Yeah, the resort hours are 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, so you'll need something to do. Kick back over a cup of Joe and listen to others spew about the best deals and spots to try. To save money get in on the happy hour specials offered for free munchies and low drink prices. Pick up your rental gear, if you need, after 3pm. Most places let you pick up the day before, to avoid the rush in the morning, without paying fees for that day. Have a Local point you in the direction of good lift ticket buys if you haven't been hooked up with a good deal yet. Take some time to read and know the responsibility code before you join the Locals on the mountain. Then take some pics to send to the yahoos in Florida!
* * * Make Google your friend by searching out the deals and details of the area. There is so much more offered in the town of Breckenridge other than the mountain activities and winter season. Plan, plan, plan then have an awesome time. Oh, and wear a helmet!
