With the threat of hurricanes no longer in the forecast, Hilton Head, South Carolina is a magical place to visit during the winter. The balmy, subtropical climate is perfect for almost anything you want to do. During November to January, you can expect lows in the 40s and highs in the 60s and low 70s.
HOLIDAY SEASON
At this time of year, lights and holiday aromas are everywhere, while islanders are preparing to celebrate the holidays, and children and adults are busy practicing for the upcoming concerts and plays.
Thanksgiving hayrides and the turkey trot race begin the holiday season, followed by many tours of holiday lightings, Red Trolley tours, Jingle Bell 5K Run, photo scavenger hunt, polar bear jump, appearances by Santa and Cinderella on Main Street, caroling hayrides, holiday parties, plays, and concerts too numerous to mention.
During the last two weeks in December, the 12 Days of Christmas are celebrated over 12 days by five restaurants with Christmas caroling and Santa appearances. The New Year's countdown is celebrated at the Westin for the benefit of the Sandbox (an interactive children's museum) with music, dancing, and a live silent auction.
SPORTS
Winter on the Island brings clear, sunny skies and mild temperatures, the perfect weather to enjoy tennis, golf and many other outdoor activities.
There are five major tennis clubs with more than 100 tennis courts on the Island, encompassing all three Grand Slam surfaces, including grass, and more than 20 golf courses designed by many famous architects. Golfers of all skill levels have found that the Island's courses are perfect for improving their putts and swings on the lush fairways and greens. It's no wonder that Hilton Head Island was voted #10 on Golf Digest's list of best golf course destinations.
If you're into water sports, the mild temperatures and pristine beaches of the Island offer parasailing, scuba diving, water skiing, jet skiing, windsurfing, surfing, kayaking, and of course, swimming. The creeks and sounds are great for snorkeling and kayaking, where you might see bottle-nose dolphins and other marine life.
Runners can enjoy the Shamrock 5K, the Sizzling' Summer Series, the Firecracker 500, the Piggy Wiggly Turkey Trot and the Jingle Bell 5K. The Island area also hosts two half-marathons and several triathlons throughout the year, many of which are held right on the beach. Walkers, hikers and cyclists will enjoy the many designated paths, bordered by plants, wildlife (birds, alligators and dolphin), and marshland, as well as the 12 miles of hard-packed, white sandy beaches.
There are so many activities happening on this Treasure Coast Island, and winter is the best time to enjoy all of them.
