Hot Springs, You "Quack" us Up!

Most people like ducks. Frankly, they're just plain cute. They're also extremely versatile, able to travel on land and in the water. And who can really say that they don't like their presence? One of the many benefits of Hot Springs, Arkansas is the ducks that can be found in the National Park--There is actually a Duck Tour given by the park.

Now, you may be thinking, what is so great about ducks? I mean, they're just birds right? Wrong! The ducks that I am speaking of are amphibious vehicles from World War II that are part car and part boat. Yes, it can drive on the roads and float on the lake. After the 1960's, ducks were no longer used by the military, so they were made available for sale. Thankfully for you and me, the Hot Springs National Park managed to get their hands on several of these ducks.

The National Park Duck Tour begins in downtown Hot Springs on Central Avenue. You will pass many local stores, restaurants, and attractions, including Bathhouse Row, which is home to spas that take advantage of the springs that give this town its name. As you travel through downtown Hot Springs, you will get a good look at many of the places that you will want to visit once the tour is over. Because of this, the Duck Tour is a great way to begin a trip to Hot Springs.

As the duck approaches Lake Hamilton, you will realize that you are not stopping at the water's edge. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The ducks plunge right into the water, often giving a slight spray to those inside. Unlike most cars that plunge into lakes, the ducks will continue on their journey as a boat. You will then enjoy a nice ride, taking in the scenery and the peaceful water of Lake Hamilton. You will also be able to see the many homes, restaurants, hotels, and stores along the shoreline. If you plan to spend time on or near the lake, the Duck Tour is a great introduction to the possibilities offered by Lake Hamilton.

Once the duck leaves the water, and reaches land again, you will drive back to downtown Hot Springs, only slightly damper than when you left. You will pass many more of Hot Springs' attractions, including the horse racing track at Oaklawn Park. You will then be returned safely to Central Avenue, where you will probably decide to take advantage of some of the many stores, attractions, and restaurants that you passed on your tour.

These ducks may not be fluffy or soft, but the Duck Tour is both fun and informative as you learn about Hot Springs and all it has to offer. No trip to Hot Springs is complete without it!
