When Christopher Columbus landed on the shores of what is now Costa Rica in 1502, the natives he encountered wore bracelets and other adornments of pure gold. Columbus was sure he had found a treasure trove of wealth and named the area the monicker it still carries today, meaning "rich coast."

The explorer's dreams of gold were never realized, but Costa Rica certainly enjoys a wealth of unique beauty, rich heritage, colorful traditions, and a lively spirit seldom seen elsewhere today. Located in the Puntarenas Province on Costa Rica's Pacific west coast, Jaco is just two hours from the nation's capital and largest city, San Jose, via a paved road that runs through the mountains. The closest beach to the capital, Jaco is also one of the country's most developed coastal towns.

Jaco has two miles of unspoiled beach, fronting an emerald green sea. The town in surrounded by jungle, forest, and rainforest, and blue mountain peaks can be seen in the distance.

The town has a wonderful feel to it. The main street runs parallel to the beach, and it's lined with little shops, sports bars, discos, and dance clubs. Bistros and quaint cafes offer all kinds of treats, ranging from local delicacies to international favorites.

Many visitors come to Jaco to experience the Carara Biological Reserve, a protected dry forest and rain forest area. At the reserve, many species of local wildlife and plant life can be seen in their natural environment.

Another draw to the area is the great surfing. The huge Pacific breakers roll into Jaco, and surfers say the waves are special here. Because of the way the tides and currents combine, Jaco's surf has become a Mecca for boarders, including old pros and beginners, who can take lessons right off the beach.

Jaco has a huge variety of activities. Visitors can raft on the Naranjo or Savegre Rivers, with class II, III, and IV rapids, raging through mountain gorges and plantations, near waterfalls and green pastures. Snorkeling, diving, hiking, kayaking, and horseback riding are popular, and the saltwater sport fishing is spectacular.

Partying in Jaco is practically nonstop, whether at the beach, in one of the casinos, or at a late-night club. There's always something going on in the area, and the attitude is "the more, the merrier."

The most wonderful part of Jaco is her people. The residents harbor immense feelings of pride for their community. In fact, the community joins together to keep the beach clean, not because they have to, but because they want their visitors to have an unforgettable experience!
