With term papers and lectures, high expectations and endless studying, college life is hard. Being a student will stress you out, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, other than graduation. Besides that magical day, there is one week a year that students dream of from the first day they step over the thresh hold and crack that first book, spring break.
For all of you spring breakers out there, deciding where to spend your hard earned vacation time might be a challenge. Obviously your options are as vast as the seven seas, the continents, big and small, and the places that surround them. So, where do you go?
Jamaica, the tiny island just south of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea, makes an ideal spring break destination. With its laid back lifestyle, amazing beaches, stunning landscape, friendly locals, and nightlife that doesn't quit until sunrise, spending the money to hang out amidst it all is definitely worth it.
Students from far and wide, flock to Jamaica each year during spring break to experience a culture and atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else on earth. The island's numerous all inclusive resorts offer beachfront villas and a famous "drink til you drop" policy. That's right, drinks are included with the cost of the room, and most students take the resorts up on their offer, throwing back drink after drink, and letting loose for the week.
Of course for those "light weights" that can't handle 24 hours of alcohol, Jamaica is more than just the home of Red Stripe and rum. The island is covered with tons of places to visit and interesting people to meet.
Find a great place to stay in Ocho Rios, on the far western end of the northern coast. The birth place of legendary Bob Marley, here you can visit the museum that shares his name. Or, hop on a boat and take an all you can drink cruise to the breath taking Dunn's River Falls. Of course you can't drink until the return trip; they don't want anyone falling down during their climb up, which is something that every visitor should try.
Ocho Rios offers dozens of resorts, close to shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. Be sure to visit Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville to grab a drink or a bite to eat, and let your troubles go. At nighttime, visit to The Cage, one of the best night clubs on the island, is a great place to dance, drink, and meet a few locals. Bring some friends; ladies get in free before 11pm each night.
Another spring break town is Montego Bay, the place you'll arrive after your flight, on the eastern side of the northern coast. Here the streets are crowded with tourists and locals alike. The hip strip, which runs through the heart of the city, is lined with bars, restaurants, and shops, and even a casino, Coral Cliff, where players drink free.
Montego hosts some of the best diving waters of the island. Take a scuba tour or do a little snorkeling to experience the beauty of Jamaica that lies just beneath the surface. Make a stop by the Aquasol Theme Park, with go-carts, bumper boats, water sports, and even glass bottomed boat rides, you could easily spend an entire day here. By night, venture to the Rumjungle, to sample the 100 different varieties of rum, or take in the live entertainment that doesn't stop until almost sunrise.
Of course there are great places to stay throughout the island. Runaway Bay and Negril are great places to visit, just not quite as lively as some of the other towns. Negril is home to the world famous Seven Mile Beach, deemed one of the best in the Caribbean. Runaway Bay offers great tours like, a personal favorite, the canopy tour. Here you zip line down through the jungles of the Blue Mountains, a great way to get a rush and experience more of Jamaica's natural beauty.
With so much to offer, the island attracts more than just spring breakers, so to get the best deals and the best variety of accommodations, book your trip as early as possible.
Bottom line, Jamaica is one of those places that you'll visit and become a part of during spring break. The Jamaican people have a word, "Jamarican", which means that once you have been there, the island becomes your home away from home. You are American, but a true Jamaican at heart.
So, leave the hectic school life behind you. Pack up your bathing suit, sunglasses, sunscreen, and flip flops. Sample some Red Stripe, and dance to some reggae, or kick back in the land where everything is "irie", and have the most unforgettable week of your life.
