Stunning tropical sunsets, the beautiful blue Pacific and one of the most lush and beautiful island not to be missed is Kauai, Hawaii. Kauai has everything you're looking for whether you are a family with children, beach bums, yuppies, hippies, newlyweds or active seniors. It caters to all tastes, every budget, and promises to deliver a fun filled holiday in the exotic surrounds of one of the planet's most superb natural area.
The island itself is broken down in 5 regions; each with its own character and surrounded by water. However, besides miles of beaches, water sports and resorts, Kauai should also be explored inland and around the perimeter.
Inland, you'll find awe inspiring scenery, including the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" as described by Mark Twain - is located on the region of the West Side. Ten miles long and about 3,600 feet deep, Waimea Canyon, reflects numerous hues of the rainbow of colors along its canyon peaks. Peer into Kalalau Valley from the lookout for the magnificent waterfall.
The North Shore region consists of Hanalei famous to the lyrics of "Puff the Magic Dragon" made famous by Peter, Paul and Mary during the sixties. Talk about a time warp, as many left the mainland and made Hanalei their utopia. Stop in town for an organic pizza.
The Napali Coast State Park is a rugged mountain coastline that is best viewed by helicopter. The awesome terrain is something you will never view elsewhere and create a lasting memory.
Even if you do not stay in Princeville, stop in one of the hotels and have a drink to take in the view along the shore. This was where "South Pacific" was filmed and is just as enchanting as in the movie.
Be careful while in the Coconut Coast not to wake the sleeping giant. Nounou Mountain appears as of it is a man asleep on his back. Legend has it that the giant demanded fish from the villagers. Finally fed up, they feed him rocks and he has been asleep every since.
Lihue / Kalapaki are one region made up as two sections. Many visitors stay in this area as it is closest to the airport. Between two Jack Nicklaus-designed 18-hole golf courses and some amazing resorts, take time out to visit Wailua Falls. If you are old enough to remember the TV show "Fantasy Island", this is exactly where the opening scene took place.
Kalapaki Beach not only boasts white sand beaches but 40 acres of freshwater tropical lagoons that serve as an exotic wildlife sanctuary known as Kauai Lagoons.
The National Tropical Botanical Garden adorns the Southside region and is the only botanical garden chartered by the US Congress. Settings of plants and flowers are abounding along a visit to the Spouting Horn. This is reminiscent of Old Faithful, as water spouts out through a lava tube from the surf of the Pacific.
Whatever region of Kauai you decide to visit, you certainly will be amazed. Just don't be startled by the quick rain showers. Why do you think they have all those stunning flowers?
