Angling for a Fishing Trip in Florida

The Kissimmee, Florida group of lakes offers exciting fishing for anglers of all ages. Some of the biggest trophy largemouth bass have been pulled from these lakes, including more than one tournament world record. There are many fishing guides that patrol these lakes for whom fishing and leading tours is a full-time job. They each have their own favorite fishing holes which they frequent on a regular basis.

Lake Tohopekaliga, known as Lake Toho to the locals, is a large lake just southeast of Kissimmee, and is perhaps the most popular destination in the Kissimmee chain of lakes. A visitor to Lake Toho should try fishing the north end of the lake first and then move south if nothing's biting. Try a steel shad lure or something shiny to attract the attention of the largemouth bass. Stay close to the shore in the weedy areas for best success. Low water levels can actually produce better fishing, although it can be hard to get the boats in and out of certain spots.

For the fisherman who is looking for an equally absorbing experience, Lake Kissimmee lies about 20 minutes south of Lake Toho. The bass often accompany schools of shad, and many anglers have had success dropping their lines just next to the shad. A good place to catch bass, bluegill, and perch is in the weedy areas around some of the lake's islands. Live bait tends to work better than artificial lures, but both types will yield good success rates.

Just upstream from Lake Kissimmee, Lake Hatchineha has never been as popular as some of the other lakes in the Kissimmee chain. However, that hasn't stopped it from producing some giant bass of its own, sometimes exceeding ten pounds. It is arguably the most scenic and shallow of the lakes close to Kissimmee. The mouths of the canals that run off the lake are great places to catch largemouth bass year-round. The nearby creeks are also hotspots due to the clear, running water.

For any fishing trip on the Kissimmee chain of lakes, it's always good to check the current conditions on the local news or local fishing websites, as the weather can change quickly. It's also good to know the water levels of the various lakes in advance, so getting stuck on the lake won't be an issue. It's important to watch for areas of high vegetation growth for the same reasons.
