Alternative Attractions & Things to Do in Kissimmee

Because of Kissimmee's close proximity to Disney World, you can get lodging accommodations along Highway 192 in Kissimmee and still be near the highway going to all the Disney World theme parks. There are, however, some local attractions in Kissimmee that you may like to visit when you've had enough of all the crowds at the theme parks.

On Highway 192, you will find the haunted Victorian estate of the Grimm family, located in the center of Old Town. Legend says that the house was used for the family's funeral business, but had to close down in 1926 because of their son's growing insanity, the stock market crash and a murderous butler. If you visit Old Town on any Saturday night, you'll see over 300 hot rods, muscle cars and classics on parade, and enjoy rides and food in a carnival atmosphere.

Florida is known for the Everglades, which stretches from South to Central Florida. In Kissimmee, you can take a half-hour exhilarating Boggy Creek Airboat Ride on an 18-passenger certified U. S. Coast Guard airboat and see alligators, turtles and birds in their natural habitat.

If you like dinner theatres, there are two in Kissimmee which you might like to visit: Medieval Times Dinner Theatre or Arabian Nights Dinner Theatre. Both have live shows with horses and jousting, which may lack a plot, but are still entertaining. At Medieval Times, you eat at large tables with other people and no silverware, but it's different and you can always find discount tickets to make it affordable.

If you're traveling with young children, they will definitely enjoy Green Meadows Petting Farm, which has over 300 farm animals for them to pet and learn about, all in a beautiful country setting. You can also take them to the Jungleland Zoo or Water Mania Water Park, which are both located on Highway 192.

If you like military aircraft, you might want to visit the Flying Tigers Warbird Air Museum. It's not your regular museum. It's located at the north end of the Kissimmee Municipal Airfield at the end of taxi-way ""Charlie."" You will see fully functional military aircraft, but the museum is actually a working warehouse where there are ongoing restoration projects that you can actually watch in progress.

If you're daring, you might want to take a one-hour hot-air balloon ride with Orange Blossoms Balloons. You meet at sunrise to greet your pilot, watch your balloon fill with air and then fly above the Disney/Orlando area. When you touch down, you will enjoy a toast of champagne, an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet and a souvenir first-flight certificate.

Highway 192 in Kissimmee has something for everyone. There are a myriad of affordable family vacation homes for rent, restaurants, fast food, souvenir shops, retail stores and theatres. And if there's not enough to do in Kissimmee, you're only a short distance from Universal Studios, Disney World and other major attractions. If you're traveling with children of school age, the best time to visit is in June. It's not as hot as July, August and September, but that time of year is also the most popular, so you might want to book in advance.
