A Daring Family Adventure: Driving to Disneyworld

For the brave family dreaming of a magical Disney vacation, driving to Kissimmee, Florida can actually add to the pleasurable experience. For midwestern travelers hailing from southern Ontario, Michigan and Western New York, the ultimate route is along I-75. Interstate 75 stretches from Detroit, MI right down to southern Florida. It's also a scenic route which takes you through the flats of Ohio through Applachia, and cruise the beautiful mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee. With plenty to do in each state, if you take the time to stop.

Our family makes the most of the drive to Disneyworld, making it part of our vacation. We take plenty of time traveling as we want to get the most of each state as we pass through. No worries about potty breaks, as there seems to be rest stops at almost every turn. You can examine the culture of each state you visit. And, the accents get thicker the farther south you go.

Plenty of variety to eat along the way, from fast food, buffets to dining out if the mood strikes you. A little hint: as you enter each state, make sure you hit the welcome stations, the staff always has a ton of information of the best places to stay, eat and attractions to see. You can usually pick up a coupon book which offers a variety of discounts on many of these places which dot the local landscape.

As you cross into Kentucky, you enter the foothills which roll along south to the northern tip of Georgia. Be sure to stop frequently to check out the scenic views as they are simply breathtaking. Each state has its own uniqueness which you will discover. Be sure to get some fresh pecans in Georgia as there plenty of roadside stops to sample a few. Enjoy the southern hospitality and try any and all of the local fare. For the shopoholic, you will find a endless array of outlet malls to choose from. One Mall in Georgia has a mens' relief room, where the husband can sit back, relax take in a ball game or even shoot a game of pool.

Interstate 75 is a direct route to Florida, just hop on and follow your nose. We usually take about 2 days to get there, but if you really want to get there in a hurry, the drive takes about 24 hours - give or take - from Detroit. But believe me, you want to enjoy the trip. Hint: be sure to take advantage of major city bypasses, especially coming to Atlanta, otherwise you may be stuck in rush hour traffic. The bypasses are cleary marked and are a direct route around the city.

Entering Florida, you will have about a 250 mile trek to Kissimmee but it's all part of the fun. You will have to enter the Florida turnpike off I-75 to reach the magical destination of Disneyworld.
