Spring Break 101: The Science of Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has increasingly become a popular Spring Break destination.  Why?  Check out the second word in the name.  (Beach. Keep up.) But  besides the warm, golden sand and sweet ocean breeze, there are so many hidden activities that spring breakers can participate in if they are able to take a break from partying. (Key word being "able.")

Fortunately, March and April are the very beginning of the tourist season.  Spring Break participants definitely want to make accommodation reservations at least a month in advance.  One tip is to bunk up with some of your more responsible friends (no one whose nickname includes "Boomer" or "Moose" or "Dookie") and rent a house or condo and split the cost.  You will get sweet accommodations and pay much less than of you each rented rooms.  Plus the ladies will like it.  (Ladies: the men will not be impressed either way.  But you already know that.  Because you are smart.  And they are college guys.)

Although the availability of party destinations is plentiful, there are a great deal of other activities that Spring Breakers can take advantage of in the Myrtle Beach area.  One of the number one attractions for visitors to the Myrtle Beach area is golfing.  There are over 100 golf courses with reasonable rates for the typical Spring Breaker (read:limited budget).

In the Spring of 2008, the first Hard Rock Theme Park will be opening in Myrtle Beach.  This theme park is based on the rock and roll of Led Zeppelin and the park will contain a generous amount of entertainment including rides, shows, and a large venue for concerts. Tickets are approximately $50 per day.  In close proximity to the theme park are a number of new restaurants and souvenir shops that students can explore throughout the day.

In 1998, Myrtle Beach acquired a professional baseball team known as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.  There are several games throughout the spring and summer with a range of ticket prices.  The games are entertaining with several events between innings for the spectators to participate in with the team members.

Across from Coastal Federal Field is Broadway at the Beach which offers sights, shopping, and dining.  Within Broadway at the Beach is Ripley's Aquarium.  For approximately $14-$17 visitors can spend three to four hours in the aquarium and enjoy hundreds of water species and shows throughout the day.  The aquarium recently added a Titanic exhibit that sparks a great deal of interest.  Also within the confines of Broadway at The Beach are the infamous Hard Rock Cafe and Senor Frog's bar/restaurants. There is also a distinct area called Celebrity Circle that contains several clubs for a variety of consumers.

For all of the Eco/Botany/Mountain Biking majors, Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park are within 10 miles of the Grand Stand.  They both offer beach access and facilities for private parties or barbeques.  In addition to the beautiful state parks is a large attraction called Brookgreen Gardens.  For a minimal charge, visitors get all day access to stunning grounds and gardens including an impressive statue garden.  (Take pictures next to the statues and your folks will think you spent the week at museums.)

Finally, the Spring Breaker can enjoy a variety of water activities.  The Myrtle Beach area contains two large water parks and several mini water parks along the Strand.  Water sports are a great attraction at the beach.  This includes parasailing, jet skis, deep sea fishing, boat rentals, and plenty of swimming.  In the Northern section of Myrtle Beach, there are several Casino Boats that take four hour trips to the ocean.  Visitors can enjoy gambling, food, and fun for a minimal fee to access the Casino boats. (Yes, we said Casino Boats.)
