With well over 100 delightfully well-maintained golf courses within beautiful Myrtle Beach, South Carolina one certainly has their work cut out choosing the best. Luckily for you, the top golf courses have already been selected by The Myrtle Beach Golf association. This indeed certainly alleviates the headache of selecting the best yourself!
Golfing is a stress relief for so many, and who but a fool, would wish to play anywhere other than where the courses have been beautifully designed by professional golf course architects? Below are the two golf courses which I and my avid golfer husband, both found suited us to a T. (Pardon the pun.)
Long Bay Golf Club
Designed by the famed Jack Nickluas in 1986, this course is perfection in itself. It's interesting to also note that the golf mounds are that well defined--topographical maps show these very vividly! Holes 7, 10, 13 and 18 have earned their fame, and have now been allotted their rightful place within the selected 100 Greatest Holes along the Grand Strand.
This course is defined as one of the most challenging of the 120 plus courses which are available on Myrtle Beach. The Long Bay course incorporates 7,025 yards from the rear tees. With a slope of 143 you certainly will have your work cut out for you. With heavy humid salt laden air, your ball will wish to sit low. Thus you will certainly need to swing that club!
The number 4 hole will be a 472 yard-par -4 which is rated at the number 1 handicap. Watch out for that very well hidden pot bunker, which is located at the rear of the green. Hole number 10 is Nucklaus's signature course and there's no wonder. This is a par 4 of just 352 yards. Try not to over play it. With a very narrow fairway and a horseshoe shaped bunker, you will certainly feel the pressure. The green has very well defined mounds here choose your clubs wisely.
Be warned, hole number 13 lives up to its reputation:it's evil. This is a par 3 with only 156 yards of play, and will test your patience. Don't lose your ball in the water!
My second choice for top golf courses on Myrtle Beach is definitely The Legends-Moorlands Course.
Listed as one of the top ten new golf courses of 1990 by Golf Digest, and in the top five public courses in America, Legends does not disappoint. Deemed as a "target course" your capabilities will be under major scrutiny. Pit yourself against "Hell's Half-acre" and you can almost here the pines whispering to each other. "He's broken into a cold sweat!" With a medley of water, sand, foliage and well defined bulk heads, your game will be nothing short of a major cardiac workout! The angles and slopes are varied, as are the bunkers. I've never seen such deep bunkers in all my life!
If you wish for the best of the best come here. But don't blame me if it plays havoc with your nerves.
