7 Places To Go Besides Orlando's Overcrowded Theme Parks

It may be hard to believe, but there is more to Orlando than massive theme parks, I-4 and International Drive (or iDrive, as the cool kids call it). I know it seems somewhat unnatural admitting there are things to do outside of the comfort zone. However, when you limit yourself to the boring standards, you don’t realize that you are missing out on other fun Orlando and Kissimmee attractions. Take a break from the masses and visit something different. Here’s a quick list to get started:

  1. So it's still a theme park, and fairly popular, it's still not nearly as crowded as the other parks. Still going strong for over 50 years, Gatorland (800-393-JAWS) is a 110-acres alligator theme park, complete with nature walks and other animals. Keep your hands outside the gators’ mouths at all times!

  2. They may the have the world by the tail at Weeki Wachee (352-596-2062). The spring is known for its mermaid performances.

  3. Silver Springs (353-236-2121) is Orlando's nature theme park, and is known for its glass bottom boat ride. There is also a petting zoo, World of Bear exhibit (the largest of its kind in the U.S.), and Panther Prowl.

  4. Located on what is considered Florida’s highest point (a whopping 298-feet above sea level), Bok Tower Gardens (863-676-1408) is perhaps one of Florida’s best-kept secrets. Designed in the 1920s, visitors can explore the gardens or hike the nature trail. While the tower is not open to the public, the bells still play music ever half hour.

  5. Experience the area’s natural beauty on Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour (407-644-4056; ). This hour-long excursion through Winter Park’s chain of lakes can prove, yes, there is more to Central Florida than interstate highways.

  6. While you’re there, explore the quaint town of Winter Park. Not only is this little gem filled with boutiques and restaurants, but the world’s largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany (that's right, smarty-pants - the maker of the famous stained-glass Tiffany Lamps). This collection of glass antiques can be found at Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art (407-645-5311).

  7. Ever wanted to milk a cow? Ok, so even if it's not your wildest dream, give it a go. While you can’t get the milk for free, your family can do this and other fun activities at Green Meadows Farm, in Kissimmee, Florida (407-846-0770). Home to over 300 animals, your family can also pack a picnic for an enjoyable day.

If you want something a little different, get out and explore the greater Orlando and Kissimmee area. The best activities for visitors to the region often go unnoticed when you're blinded by the bright lights of Florida's theme parks. Best of all, most of these activities are far more affordable than the major theme parks, unless of course, you lose an arm and a leg to Florida’s alligators!
