Orlando's Forgotten Neighbor: Kissimmee, FL

There was a time that Kissimmee was often overlooked as viable destination, because honestly, everyone’s eyes were on the holy grail of Central Florida’s destination – Orlando or more aptly –Walt Disney World. Kissimmee had the reputation of being the place that you stayed if you couldn’t find a room near the parks, and where you could get inexpensive Disney tchotckes. For confused readers - that is actually the correct spelling of 'tchotchkes'- pronounced "Chotch Keys" - a.k.a. cheap souvenirs and knick-knacks on which to waste hard earned vacation budget.

<>That was then. Over the years, Kissimmee has, I wouldn’t say, rebranded itself, but perhaps, re-established itself as a destination separate from Orlando.

Yes, while you can still find plenty of rooms, and “3 for $10” Disney T-shirts, there is more to this city than being Orlando’s convenient neighbor.

What many people aren’t aware of, since they tend to waste spend most of their time in line, on a ride, or at the pool, is that this part of Florida is known for its natural beauty. If you want to take a break from the craziness, you can reconnect with nature in Kissimmee.

Whether you are a water lover or enjoy looking at wildlife, Fishing Charters, Inc. (800-244-9105) offers a guided charter on Big Lake Tohopekaliga and the Kissimmee Chain of lakes. You never know, you just might see a gator or two. Do you want more of the outdoors and wildlife? If so, consider taking an airboat tour. While airboats are typically associated with the Florida Everglades in Miami, what you may not know is the headwaters for the Everglades actually begin in Central Florida. The Kissimmee Swamp Tours (407-436-1059) takes you on an unforgettable 90-minute adventure.

Feel like taking a hike? Visit The Nature Conservancy's Disney Wilderness Preserve (407-935-0002), and enjoy exploring the lay of the land on a three-mile hike. If you are looking for something a little longer, Lake Kissimmee State Park (863-696-1112) has 13-miles of trails to explore. The state park is said the best place to spy bald eagles – so, keep you eyes upwards to see these majestic birds.

While you can’t beat Kissimmee for its convenient location to Florida's major vacation attractions, don’t overlook what it has to offer as well. Discover a new part of Central Florida that you might not have known about before, and then get your T-shirts on the way home.
