Pincate Biosphere Reserve: A New Planet Right Outside of Puerto Penasco

If you have always dreamed of flying to the Moon and walking in the footsteps of astronauts, then an excursion to Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is a must! NASA astronauts actually trained on this stark and rugged terrain in preparation for landing on the moon.  Pinacate's otherworldly appearance provides a dramatic contrast to the restful undemanding atmosphere of Puerto Penasco's seaside location.

Located 30 miles northeast of town, the drive to the reserve takes under an hour.  Though its close location to the booming resort may suggest otherwise, this is not a place to be explored with flipflops.  If, however, the excitement of lying in a beach-side chair wears thin after awhile, this may be the perfect adventure.

Pinacate  is a 30 mile wide volcanic field.  The park encompasses over 700 acres, and includes over 400 volcanoes, along with lava tubes and volcanic ash.  Though there are few paths, you can climb up the volcanic cones and peer into the interior of the craters.

The largest, most frequently climbed volcano is El Elegante.   A two to three hour hike along a well-marked path brings you to the summit where there is a spectacular view of the volcanic field.  From here you can also see the variety of plant life that dots the area.

Depending on the time of year, the temperature can rise as high as 120 degrees.  This is a rustic area, and it is essential you make the proper preparations.  Water and sunblock are a must, and alcohol is not recommended .  You need to be in good physical shape to take this trip, so if you are here during spring break, make sure you take a break from heavy partying the night before.

Despite its stark ruggedness, Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is a mecca of animal and plant life.  Make sure you know how to recognize scorpions, black widow spiders, Gila monsters and rattlesnakes, all of which can be found amongst the bountiful wildlife.  Safeguard yourself by not putting your hands and feet anywhere you can't see them.

Though the name Gila monster may create visions of an ugly three-headed giant beast, it is none of these things.  Including the tail, this lizard doesn't grow to more than two feet in length.  It moves in a very slow, sluggish manner, presenting little risk to anyone attentive to the surroundings.  Its beautiful beaded skin has long been an inspiration to Native American artists.

The plant life is varied, and much of it has spines.  Though there are a number of species of cactus, one of the most interesting is the teddy bear cholla.  Named for the soft thread covering it, this is definitely not something your small children should hug.  In the event that it proves to be irresistible, be sure and bring a comb and tweezers to remove these barbed spines.

The entrance fee is by donation only.  Don't leave the road, litter, or remove any of the natural wonders, and prepare to be awed by this magnificent piece of nature.
