Take a Ride on the St. Simons Trolley

I have lived on St. Simons Island (hereafter referred to as "The Island") for the past 6 years. I have played tourist and I have played local, and I have had a blast as both. Either way you play it, one of the most interesting things to do while on The Island is to go on the St. Simons Island Trolley Tour.

You get on this vintage green trolley and troll around The Island. Its great to hear all the local lore from somebody who knows what they're talking about. It's also really funny to hear about what the locals think about the trolley as well!

If you're lucky, you get taken around The Island by Bunny, the grand master (or is it mistress?) of the trolley. She's hysterical. She knows all the lore and, better yet, she knows all the dirt on half of the island. She tells it like it is and can add spice to any story.  You are driven around The Island at a nice speed, fast enough to make it interesting but slow enough to drive the locals crazy. She's been known to scare a local or two off the road when she's driving and talking at the same time! Its funny. But, she's completely safe  no accidents since she started the business!

The trolley tour takes you to the "highlight film" of The Island. You learn all about the "tree spirits," which are five artist's carvings that are in trees throughout The Island. The game is to try to find all five before you leave The Island. Bunny will give you a few clues.

A few of the famous stops include the lighthouse, Ft. Frederica, Bloody Marsh and Christ Church. The best stop, by far, is Christ Church. Bunny will tell you tales about the residents of the graveyard that will curl your toes!

One of the most famous Islanders was Eugenia Price, a romance and fiction writer. Her work can be bought at pretty much any store on The Island. She recommended the tour to her friends, a fact that is prominently displayed on the trolley herself. Ms. Price's books feature many characters from the Christ Church cemetery and Bunny can tie the tour and the books together in her sleep. It's the perfect stop for any Eugenia Price fan.

The trolley can also be rented out for parties and weddings. The best is her outfit for weddings. The trolley wears a "veil"  its just a heck of a lot of tulle, but its fun anyway.

The trolley tour is the cheapest and easiest way to get your Island history lesson while having someone else drive you around. She's a lot of fun and a neat way to make some fast island friends. Try it out next time you're around. You'll be glad you did --or you'll at least have a cute picture of the family taken in front of it! Either way, it's a great way to spend an afternoon!
