Fishing From the Dock, the Ocean, the Kayak, and the Bridges--All on St. Simon! - St. Simons Island, Georgia Travel Guide - Vacation Rentals by Zonder

Fishing From the Dock, the Ocean, the Kayak, and the Bridges--All on St. Simon!

Sure, St Simon's Island, off the Georgia coast, is well-known for its historic landmarks, superb shopping, and myriad of restaurants.  But really, truly, it is the ultimate vacation spot for both the serious and beginning fisher.  Want to make your angler friends drool?  From July through September the deep fisherman could potentially snag a shark or tarpon!

Stop by St. Simons Bait and Tackle to pick up supplies at a reasonable price.  See if Mr. Bird, the African Gray Parrot is around, and give him a friendly hello. Rub elbows with locals and tourists alike who congregate near the Village pier for some might fine fishing.   For a change of view, hike down to the Jekyll Island Pier, at the north end, in the Clam 1 Creek scenic picnic spot.  Either venue is great for float or bottom fishing, as well as trying your hand at crabs (prevalent in the morning or early afternoon), so get out there already!  Walk to the area bridges, after making sure fishing is allowed of course, and drop a line.  It's a nice way to meet some people, hear "the one that got away" stories, and find out more about the Island.  Best of all, food and drink is never very far away so when the fish don't bite, you can.

Fishing from a kayak is a nice and quiet way to get a little exercise as well as land a few good fish!  It's a great change of pace to glide through peaceful and quiet tidal pools, catch a splendid sunset while paddling around scenic salt marshes, and even the open sea, if you so dare.  Hit one of the kayak rental and sales places and try one on for size.  There are a variety of kayaks and important information to know before you venture out, so ask questions, take a lesson or two, or go whole hog and participate in one of the all day fishing events.

Feeling ready for the thrill and adventure of hauling in a big catch?  St Simon's has more fighting and frisky fish than you can handle!  Snag a Spanish or King Mackerel, Snapper, and Sea Bass, or so many more!   All the reefs, holes, bars, and buoys mean there are many enticing hiding places where fish can lurk.  The best way to find the "honey spot" is to hire a charter captain.  These salty men and women of the water know the area like the back of their sun-tanned, capable hands and can instantly take you to the best fishing treasure troves on the island.  You won't even have to lug around your own bait and supplies as they are almost always provided.  Plus, they know the rules of the island and can help you out.  What could be easier?  Don't waste time looking for that perfect spot, the one that the determined fisher dreams about, let a knowledgeable charter company take you to the fish.  Bring back the perfect catch for that full mount replica you have always wanted and watch your friends turn green with envy.

No matter how you do it, the fishing is fine in St Simon's Island, and it's family friendly!  Let the kids try their hand at crabbing or throw in a line or two.  Drop your child off at a fishing charter, learning new skills, a little independence, and a chance to make a big catch of their own.  Or spend the day together, bonding over the "Golden Islands" glorious waters and prolific fish.  Go ahead, try for an amazing Mackerel or Grouper.  Snag a nice Amberjack or Cobia.  Your St Simon's vacation will be an experience to remember - and one that undoubtedly guarantees a return trip!
