The idyllic countryside flecked with pristine mountain lakes and streams will serve as the perfect spot to pitch a tent and cast a line. Wind your way north to the jagged and amorphous lava cave formations, tracing a path to the famed Lava Butte created some 6000 years ago or journey southward to the Newberry National Monument. Whatever wilderness adventure you desire, it's here in Sun River.
Sun River is a popular Northwestern resort destination located in central Oregon, bordered by the Deschutes River, 15 miles south of Bend and surrounded by coniferous forests. It is nestled on the dry side of the Cascade Mountain range. This sprawling forest once served as a paradise for hunters. Deer and elk graze in these woodlands as do migratory birds on brief sabbaticals before embarking to warmer climates. Though the community has been settled in recent years with approximately 3000 vacation homes and 900 condos (many of which can be rented for short periods), Sun River maintains its many natural charms.
For the sportsman, this grand resort community offers impressive golf courses. The full-service Sun River Resort boasts the two most impressive greens. The Meadows course was designed by accomplished architect John Fought and it features difficult fairways and tremendous variety. Seven of its holes hug the river that bears the resort's name. These greens have strategically placed directional bunkers and fore-bunkers which provide an exciting challenge. The Woodlands course was designed by eminent architect Robert Trent Jones and is widely revered as Oregon's most impressive 18 hole extravaganza. In fact, it was voted the top course in the country by Golf Magazine in a recent issue. The resort also has a nine hole link that is fun for the whole family.
Sun River has many other ways to have fun outside. The community offers 30 miles of paved bike paths for the avid cyclist. Mountain biking is one of the most exhilirating activities in Oregon as it gives one a chance to get in shape while also enjoying the state's natural beauty. Tennis may be your game and Sun River offers 31 outdoor courts. There are many horse stables for the budding equestrian, so step into your jodhpurs and on to that horse. You can enjoy wildlife in its natural habitat by taking a trip to the Nature Center and Observatory. Finally, if you want to get out on the water, there are canoe and kayak rentals available. Embrace your adventurous side and roam free in Sun River. You won't be disappointed.
