Big Island: More Than Meets The Eye

Big Island Hawaii isn't just big, it's humongous! And with that said, it offers an abundance of activities for the travel enthusiast. From one end of this stately island to the other end, you'll find a vast assortment of enjoyable things to do.

Enjoy the verdant rainforests as you tread contentedly through the shade of the tall palms. Delight as you see a brilliant rainbow display of tropical birds that follow you as you walk. Inhale the intoxicating essence of salty seas and sheer serenity. The lushness of the rainforests and the call of the exotic birds will certainly have you feeling as if you have stepped into a small part of tropical paradise.

Big island offers so much for the visitor wishing to get his money's worth of excitement, and the black sand beaches, arid deserts and charming snow-capped mountains won't disappoint. What a tropical amazing playground it is, and what an assortment of play you shall have!

Grab your warm mittens and play upon the mystical snow topped Mauna Kea, which is the world's tallest mountain measured from ocean floor to the tip. Inhale the crisp, fresh mountain air, as you frolic like a child in the soft, pristine white snow.

I particularly love hiking, so when I visited I immensely enjoyed exploring Waipio Valley, deemed "valley of the kings". The hike is extremely steep so ensure that you are fit before embarking on this trek. Descending well over 1,000 feet, much of this elegant land is private property, so be considerate and certainly respectful.

Situated on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island are seven glorious valleys. Walk to the Waipio Valley lookout with your binoculars. The views are amazing indeed - so green, dense, and certainly a photographer's dream. The coastal end will bring you to the sandy black beaches, that are guarded over by 200-foot cliffs.

Here you will see the crystal clear waters of the cascading waterfalls. How serene the sight and indeed the emotions are as you feel a part of nature's exquisite beauty - such spectacular views to see and photograph. Tranquil rivers and a medley of assorted jungle trees and animals will greet you as you progress even further into the dense foliage.

You can see the valley by means of a horseback tour if you wish. Slow and steady paced horses gently lope as you are transported into the jungle, with its taro patches, historical sights and magnificent waterfalls. Here you will also view many sacred spiritual sites.

Don't forget to treat yourself to the best dinner the island has to offer: the Tex Drive-In Restaurant in Honokaa. Give in to the diet and experience a heavenly meal of Portuguese Malasadas, which are a deep fried scrumptious donuts. You will come back for more, I assure you!

Last but certainly not least is Puukohola Heiau, which is located on the northwestern Kohala Coast. This glorious temple is deemed as one of the most sacred areas of Hawaii. This enormous stone temple is one of the oldest and largest structures on the island, dedicated to the effort of stopping civil unrest and once hoped to unite the many Hawaiian Islands.
