He wants to get back in the water as soon as possible. For a Christmas or Thanksgiving holiday that is Hawaiian Don Ho Ho Ho friendly, consider the island of Kauai.

What would Christmas be like without cold snow and roasting chestnuts in the fire? A lot more fun unless you like shoveling snow to shovel, expensive heating bills, and being stuck inside for days without end with relatives who have nothing to do. On the beautiful garden island of Kauai, winter becomes your sunny playground. You won't need mittens and hats, just swimsuits, swim goggles, and sunscreen. The fire you gather around will be the imu roasting the pig for the luau, and the delicious aroma will be equal to (if not better) than the traditional turkey back home. There may be macadamia stuffing and fresh pineapple instead of mashed potatoes and string beans, poi instead of cider, and purple sweet potato cheesecake instead of pumpkin pie. But, one thing that will be the same anywhere you travel in Hawaii is the sense of gratitude and celebration that are hallmarks of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Even before Europeans brought Christianity to the islands, Hawaiians celebrated Mahahiki, a four month period of peace, feasting, and gratitude to the earth for plentiful harvests. The holiday has been enriched by every culture which has become part of Hawaii. You'll still hear Silent Night, but you'll also hear Mele Kalikimaka and Here Comes Santa in a Red Canoe. Christmas trees will likely be Norfolk Pines and will be decorated with kukui nuts, woven pineapples, and tapa cloth angels.

The annual Festival of Lights Parade takes place December 1st in Lihue and the annual Christmas Parade (complete with fire engines escorting the floats) is held in Waimea on December 23rd. Santa and Mrs. Claus make appearances at both events. If you need to help Santa out with his presents, check out the Waimea Craft Fair at the old Waimea Sugar Mill on Kaumualii Highway, or shop in the many fun stores in the Coconut Plantation near Poipu.

Kauai, like all of Hawaii, is very church oriented. You'll have many choices of religious services to attend and many opportunities to experience old traditions and to learn new ones. The blending of cultures has resulted in holiday celebrations that emphasize the joy of friends and family, the happiness of gift giving, and the honoring of Nature for its beauty.

Whether you're surfing the waves at Hanalei, swimming with turtles in Poipu, or strolling the streets of Lihue, at the end of the day, you'll gather with family and friends to share a delicious, colorful meal (Hawaiian style) and to give thanks. Kauai makes the holidays a real celebration.

Kauai is also the only island that was not conquered by King Kamehameha I in the early nineteenth century. Kaumualii, ruler of Kauai, simply forfeited the land to avoid further bloodshed. The Kingdom of Hawaii was finally established in 1810. A past of fervent spirituality and industrial success fills this island's history with intrigue. Various sites await those who would like to delve into it deeper.

Before the first Polynesians arrived centuries ago, the mythical Menehune tribe is said to have inhabited only one island of the entire Hawaiian archipelago: Kauai. The Menehune were tiny stonemasons who built things like temples and moats overnight. They always vanished mysteriously at dawn. Alekoko Fishpond is the site where they supposedly pulled off an immense feat; legend has it that the pond was built in one night! It's unfinished on the eastern side because the sun rose before they were quite finished. Nowadays, the Menehune are blamed for bad luck.

Another traditional belief was that worship, sacrifices, and ceremonies needed to take place at temples called heiaus. Many of these still stand today, the largest being Poliahu Heiau, which was named after a snow goddess. Placards set around the area provide information about the site. Poliahu Heiau should be entered from the southeast corner. Heiaus are still considered sacred to Hawaiians, and visitors must keep in mind that people come to meditate within them often. Nearby, birthstones called Pohaku Hoohanau make up another special site. People born near these massive boulders were guaranteed high rank as adults.

Kauai has more than spiritual history and legends to offer. The Kokee Natural History Museum displays artifacts, teaches about local wildlife, and explains the natural history of the island. One must drive past the stunning Waimea Canyon in order to reach the building. "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" is worth stopping for; every passerby should take a break and soak up the view. Compared to Kokee, the Kauai Museum in Lihue is much less quaint. Textiles, photographs, ancient tools, and even rotating galleries attract people from all walks of life.

On the southern side of the island, Old Koloa Town charms all who enter. Koloa is home to Hawaii's first sugar plantation, run by Ladd and Company in the thirties. People can check out the plantation ruins or head straight to the historic center to learn more about the town. Grove Farm Homestead Museum is another closed-down sugar plantation worth visiting. This 80-acre property was turned into a museum in 1978. Tours are in high demand, and since there are only six given per week, reservations should be booked far in advance. This tour is not one to miss! The awe-inspiring aesthetics of Kauai have earned it the title of Garden Isle, but forget that for a moment. Its history alone is reason enough to visit and explore.

Your family has returned to the condo, after a hard day on the slopes. As you sit by the fire sipping cocoa, you hear a grumbling sound. It starts on one side of the room, and continues around the circle. What's that sound? Then, you understand. Like the plant in the Little Shop of Horrors, everyone's stomach is saying, Feed me! I'm hungry!

So where should you eat? Fortunately, you will have many tempting choices. Keystone is home to Colorado Mountain College's Culinary Institute. For three years, the top students apprentice under the strict tutelage of the world's best chefs. This demanding program produces some of the best chefs in Summit County, so you can be assured a good meal wherever you go. Let's start with the place where Keystone history began.

The Ski Tip Lodge

Back in 1941, Max Dercum, for whom Dercum Mountain is named, purchased a place called the Black Ranch, which was once a stagecoach stop. In 1949, the name was changed to the Ski Tip Lodge, and by 1967, Dercum's dream of a full service ski resort were realized. The name "Ski Tip Lodge" is based on the once popular practice of using the tips of vintage skis for door handles. Today, the rotating menu at the Ski Tip Lodge receives the highest accolades form its guests. Written up by Denver's 5280 as Colorado's Most Romantic Getaway, the Ski Tip Lodge tends to attract couples. That said, it's probably not the best place to pick up girls.

The Keystone Ranch

Back in the 1930s, a romantic man by the name of Howard Reynolds built a ranch house for his fiance, Bernadine Smith. Today, this restored log home is called Keystone Ranch Restaurant. It was originally built as a cattle ranch and lettuce farm. Until 1977, it was a working ranch, which delighted locals with its succulent veal, crisp lettuce and fresh dairy products. The Keystone Ranch has been the proud recipient of the AAA Four Diamond Award and the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. The elaborate sis-course meal continually scores high on the Zagat Survey. Since the Keystone Ranch is located near the Keystone Golf Course, its elk with wild mushrooms and other Rocky Mountain specialties tend to attract the golfing crowd. Interpret this as you will.

Alpenglow Stube

Are you one of those people who get high on good food? If so, you will surely enjoy Alpenglow Stube. At an altitude of 11,444 feet, this keystone North Peak restaurant is the highest in the country. If you thought that the lunches at Aspen of Deer Valley were elegant, you have never been to Alpenglow Stube. Unlike any ski resort restaurant, when you enter Alpenglow Stube, you get to trade in your ski boots for a pair of comfortable slippers. After all, how can you enjoy a great meal if your feet are killing you?

Your feast begins with a choice of two different soups. Then, head to the gourmet buffet, where you'll find a tempting array of salads, homemade breads and gourmet cheeses. Don't eat too much. You'll want to leave room for the main dish and desert. On Sundays, Alpenglow Stube features a delicious brunch. A mimosa is included with your brunch. However, please drink and ski responsibly. Since Alpenglow Stube's prices are as steep as its surrounding slopes, it is not popular with the local duct tape crowd. That said, it is definitely worth a one-time splurge.

Der Fondue Chessel
The elegance of Alpenglow Stube means that it might not be the best place for kids. Fortunately, that does not mean that they have to be deprived of the "take-the-gondola-to-dinner" experience. The Bavarian party atmosphere of Der Fondue Chessel makes it an appropriate dining venue for kids and adults. However, it is not ideal for kids with behavioral problems. It takes two gondolas to get to the restaurant. If you are going for dinner, you will be cold, but no worries. Keystone generously supplies you with some blankets. They might have the same texture as a Brillo pad, but they are blankets just the same. After enduring endless whines of when are we gonna' be there?" or endless choruses of 100 bottles of beer on the wall, you will reach Der Fondue Chessel, where the Bavarian musicians will serenade with choruses of Roll Out the Barrel." Sit by the fire and drink your booze-spiked hot chocolate.

Then, proceed to the banquet hall, where the real fun begins. Each table has what the Denver Post describes as your personal Fon-Dude or Fod-Dudette. With the chirpiness of a ski instructor teaching a wedge turn, these delightful guys and dolls teach you how to grill your choice of two meats and vegetables. Yes, for $50 a person, you get to grill your own food! Once it's done, you can dip it into a scrumptious variety of sauces. It's quite a messy experience, but it's a whole lot of fun!

Keystone Food Festival
In early September, you can sample the best selections of Keystone's restaurants, as well as some sinfully delicious chocolate, at the Taste of Keystone Festival. Call 970-468-1898 for details. Keystone is living proof that resort food need not be awful- As long as you are willing to pay the price!

In the past, you've made sacrifices. You hugged Mickey at Disney, and lost money at Vegas. This year, the tribe has spoken. You're going to Keystone.

Getting There Is Half The Fun

Keystone is the perfect choice for a family ski vacation. If you're traveling by plane, your flight arrives in Denver International Airport. Kids get a kick out of the inter-terminal train, which plays cowboy music upon its arrival. Then, there's the special ski baggage carousel, which features separate, upright compartments for your skis and snowboards. As you await the arrival of your beloved quiver, you and your family can watch the possible Darwin Award recipients that try to sit in the compartments.

Renting a car? Make sure that it has snow tires. While this might sound like a no-brainer, in heavy snow, you won't be allowed on certain sections of I70 without snow tires or chains. Fortunately, Keystone is closer to Denver Airport than other resorts, so you won't have to spend too much time listening to choruses of "are we there yet?" If weather permits, take the Loveland Pass. This steep mountain road is the highest pass in Colorado. At certain points, you can get out of the car and take in the spectacular view. Now, onward to Keystone!

Sea level visitors might find that they feel a bit light headed upon arrival. Resist the temptation to go directly to the slopes. Keystone has night skiing and night tubing. Once you've acclimated, you can make up for lost time by extending your ski day. Older folks are often more susceptible to altitude sickness, so advise grandma and grandpa to lay off the booze. One drink at altitude equals three at sea level, so if you don't want grandma singing off-key Sinatra songs at Dos Locos Karaoke Bar, restraint is advised!

Hopefully, you decided to rent a multi-bedroom condo, as opposed to a number of separate hotel rooms. What you might sacrifice in privacy, you can make up for in convenience. Extended family members can help take care of the kids, and cooking becomes a family event. If you book a condo in any one of Keystone's villages, you will receive the valuable Adventure Passport, which offers perks such as:

*15% Discount at a variety of Keystone Restaurants
*Free Salad Bar at the Edgewater Cafe with the purchase of an entree
*Free Salsa and Chips at Parrot Eyes, with the purchase of an entre

Keystone Family Adventures

The Adventure Passport also offers free NASTAR family racing. It starts at 10:30 at the Flying Dutchman Race Arena. Advice for parents with teenagers: They will most likely beat you. Get over it! There's more to skiing than speed. Keystone offers 3,148 acres of varied terrain, as well as 3,128 spectacular vertical. Its 121 trails are serviced by 20 lifts including two gondolas, 1 express six-pack and 5 high-speed quads. Mom and dad can take the guided backcountry Keystone Adventure Tour, while Aunt Alice and Uncle Horace can cruise the long green and blue runs such as Schoolmarm. Let your teenage knuckle draggers jib in the new A51 Terrain Park. The key to a successful family ski trip is balancing family time with individual freedom. Stay connected either by cell phone, or one of those portable radios. However, keep in mind that other people can hear your radio conversations, so watch what you say.

Group Hug

Never try to force family members to ski terrain that is inappropriate for their abilities. Sure, ski lessons are expensive, but so are divorce attorneys. If you take your wife on terrain that freaks her out, forget about "getting lucky,' even with the romantic in-room Jacuzzi! Worried that she might fall for the handsome ski instructor? Either find a coach whose "pole swings in a different direction," or enroll your wife in one of Keystone's famous Betty Fests, designed for female skiers and riders. You can have some family time by enrolling in one of Keystone's Mom, Dad and Me sessions. For $95, three family members can get a one-hour lesson with one of Keystone's fantastic coaches. This type of lesson helps family members learn how to accommodate each other's skill and terrain preferences on the slopes.

Family ski lessons are just one way for families and extended families to enjoy their time at Keystone. In addition to downhill skiing, there's cross-country skiing, snowshoe hikes, tubing, skating and sleigh rides. Even new moms can enjoy a family vacation at Keystone. She can purchase a sturdy baby carrier, and head for the Keystone Nordic Center. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing while carrying the baby adds weight to the activity, and can therefore burn off extra calories. Furthermore, the $9 dollar trail fee at the Nordic Center is considerable less expensive than lift tickets at any downhill resort. Athletic grandma and grandpas can join the family on the downhill or cross-country slopes, or enjoy the various shopping opportunities in the Keystone Village. Reward them for their babysitting services by treating them to a day at the upscale Keystone Lodge and Spa. Let them hold the video camera to film the family members as they come down from the slopes. Memories are made of this.

As such, hardcore skiers and riders tend to give it the Rodney Dangerfield distinction, also known as "no respect." Truth be told, Keystone has evolved into a breathtaking three-mountain behemoth, with terrain that's suitable for novices, cruisers and adrenaline junkies. Its long beginner runs allow new skiers to practice their new skills without the annoyance of constant lift line waits. Intermediates enjoy the wide open cruisers. Advanced and expert skiers can get their adrenaline fix in secluded black diamond glades, untracked bowls, and bump runs with Volkswagen sized moguls.

If that doesn't impress you, consider the mountain stats:

*3,148 acres
*3,128 vertical feet
*121 trails
*20 lifts including 2 gondolas, 1 express six-pack and 5 high-speed quads
*Night skiing
*Tree skiing

Combine that with 240 inches of annual snowfall, and you have a recipe for a great ski vacation. Keystone is usually one of the earliest Summit County resorts to open. Furthermore, it's open until 9AM till 9PM, in case you still have energy at the end of the day. In fact, from late November to early December, you can enjoy 36 Hours at Keystone, a marathon snow-sliding event for the athletic and energetic.

Dercum Mountain

Some people have compared Keystone's terrain layout to a three humped camel. A large number of Keystone's trails are located on Dercum Mountain, which was named after Keystone founders Max and Edna Dercum. Here, intermediates will think that they've died and gone to heaven. Dercum Mountain has over 50 novice and intermediate trails. Some are three and a half miles long. Many of the trails on Dercum Mountain allude to Keystone's mining history. For example, if you see a trail called Jackwhacker, please get your mind out of the gutter! In the mining era, the burros, also called jacks, were engaged as ore carriers. The miner that drove the burros encouraged their compliance by using a whip, also known as a whacker. Thus, the name "Jackwhacker." Depending on your abilities, this intermediate/advanced trail may or may not whip you into shape.

When Ullr is in a selfish mood, Dercum Mountain gives Mother Nature a hand with its state-of-the-art snowmaking system. In cold weather, visitors appreciate Dercum Mountain's River Run Gondola. When you reach the top, you'll find the new A51 Terrain Park, which was ranked in Transworld Snowboarding's Top 10 Parks. If you're new to the whole jibbing thing, you might want to start at the Incubator, which is a good preparation for the harder stuff at A51.

North Peak

North Peak is the second "hump" of the Keystone camel. This is where some advanced skiers and riders get their bragging rights. When you get bored with the terrain on Dercum, ski through a tree run called The Windows, or take the Outpost Gondola. North Peak is home to Keystone's famous mogul runs, such as Ambush and Powder and Powdercap. If your knees can't handle the moguls, try the long cruisers, such as Starfire and Prospector.

Outback

When the Outback area was added in 1990, Keystone began to rid itself of its stigma as a "gaper" resort. According the Vail Daily, if you don't know what a gaper is, you might just be one. However, this is not really a bad thing. A gaper is simply someone who is not familiar with the terrain of a ski area, the culture of the ski town and the appropriate way to dress for skiing and riding. (Hint: Don't wear jeans!) In general, gapers don't ski expert terrain, which is what is served in the Outback, along with great steaks. Kidding! A $5 snowcat ride brings you to Outback Ridge, which adds another 600 feet of vertical to the terrain. Call (970) 496-4FUN for details.

Keystone Ski School

If you want to lose your gaper status, consider taking a lesson at Keystone's renowned ski school. While the child and adult lesson are superb, the specialty clinics are spectacular. Keystone instructors are trained by Bob Barnes, author of the Complete Encyclopedia of Skiing. Bob is so dedicated to ski instruction that he offers free, weekly movement analysis sessions to Summit County instructors. If you come to Keystone in December, you will want to enroll in Bob's Boot Camp. This two-day clinic is open to intermediate and advanced skiers. Having skied with Bob, I will warn you that he will challenge all of your misconceptions about skiing. Bob used to teach with the famous Olympic Gold Medalist Mahre brothers. He subscribes to their credo, "If it didn't feel strange, you didn't change!" Listen to what he says, and you will become a better skier!

Aspiring ski divas might want to enroll in Keystone's two-day Betty Fest. These woman's only workshops include video analysis, discussions about nutrition, female-specific concerns and women's equipment.

That's the Ticket!

If you are only spending one day at Keystone, you can find discount lift tickets at City Market and Safeway. However, joining the Peaks Reward program has some valuable perks. Peaks Rewards offers discounted lift tickets, points for future purposes at all Vail Resort Ski areas and resort charging privileges. Instead of carrying cash, simply show your Peaks Rewards card at Keystone cafeterias and restaurants.

A trip to Keystone holds the key to a great ski vacation. Check it out! You won't be disappointed.

It is a night of the scare-crazed, costume wearing, spirit searching crowd to come out and get spooked. From a Gas Lamp Bash to a Haunted Trail, San Diego spooks up the best activities on this warm autumn eve. So get in the car and drive down to California's scariest city and search for the dead. Here is a list of the Spookiest Places to Visit on your trip--I hope you live to tell the tales upon your return home!

1. The Haunted Trail
Balboa Park has a lot going for it- museums, beautiful architecture, a theater, and of course the luscious park, but what happens when the sun sets and the visitors go home? The only time to find out is during the last week of October when the parks lights are traded for bales of hay and scary creatures. The trail boasts the motto, "It's no walk in the park" and this is no lie. Creeps like Michael Myers, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Serial Killer, Freddie Kreuger, and others chase you, strike at you, and touch you- and that is not a joke, they really come after you and might leave you with wet pants from the fear they instill! This is not for children or people with heart problems (disclaimer)!

2. Monster Bash
Looking for something a little less scary, but with the same intensity? Take the trolley into the Gas Lamp district for a party that you will never forget. Sponsored by Dos Equis, this party is all about the costumes, the themes, and most of all the drinking. College students line up for this and it takes a true partier to make it through the night. The great thing about this shin-dig is the location: the Gas Lamp, which gives you a chance to see the Historic area at night while it is all aglow!

3. Mira Mesa's Monster Manor
Looking for a spooktacular haunted house? Look no further, this is the place. With over 4000 square feet of ghoul grinning, spirit possessing, fright inventing space, the Monster Manor is decked out to scare the strong of heart. They feature a daytime haunting for the weak as well-if you have children I highly suggest taking them to this tour because the night time tours are frightful to say the least.

4. The Haunted Hotel
The sibling of the The Haunted Trail, The Haunted House takes horror movies and turns them to life within this creepy hotel. You will find yourself a rising star amongst the scariest and most gruesome movies of all time.which ones? Well every season brings a scarier change. Last year I found myself running from the torture room in the thriller, Hostel and coming face to face with Mr. Myers, mask and all. If you are ready for true fright, I suggest purchasing your tickets online because the lines are long, but the screams that you have been holding back all year are bound to come out within this creepy, cob-web filled hotel

5. Point Loma Lighthouse
A true hidden gem in San Diego is the Point Loma Lighthouse, a creepy old lighthouse built in 1855, has not been occupied since the 1900's, but voices can be heard. The last keeper was Robert Israel and is has vanished, but the remnants of his things are intact and it seems as though someone or something still resides in this lighthouse. Check this out because history has put its curse here.

Beside the above creepy locations there are many more in San Diego--cemeteries, houses, parks, and hotels are known for that ghostly feeling. Come to San Diego and you will find yourself among the best costumes, and the best haunted locations. I guarantee a spook!

If your spine tingles at the thought of mysterious cold spots or the eerie sounds of footsteps creaking down the hallway, San Diego has some great places for you!

WILLIAM HEATH DAVIS HOUSE

Nestled in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the William Heath Davis House is the oldest structure in downtown San Diego. Built in 1850, it boasts classic Victorian decor and a Victorian-era ghost hostess. (A ghostess?)

Though her identity is unknown, the apparition of a Victorian woman is often seen near the stairs leading to the second floor. In one account, a tour guide had arrived to start the tour only to find the guests already going upstairs. When questioned, they told the guide that a woman in period costume had beckoned them up. No one was in costume that day nor was anyone upstairs.

Another eerie story was featured in a 1977 San Diego newspaper article. Interviewees reported lamps flickering on and off by themselves. Admittedly, that isn't unusual with power surges and sudden outages... Except that the house wasn't outfitted with electricity until 1984.

HOTEL DEL CORONADO

Fondly dubbed "The Del" by locals and visitors alike, the hotel boasts many famous people as guests throughout its 120-year history. Names like Marilyn Monroe and Lyndon B. Johnson have passed through its storied hallways. And then there was Kate Morgan.

Kate Morgan was a con-artist who traveled with her husband, Thomas. A beautiful woman, she would charm gullible men into poker games with her "brother." Once they fleeced the unfortunate lad of his funds, they would move on to the next mark. The scams worked well until she found out she was pregnant. Thomas, apparently not pleased, left her.

She checked into The Del around Thanksgiving in 1892 and waited five lonely days for her husband to return. Finally, despondent at being abandoned, she met tragedy at the end of a .44 caliber gun.

Her ghost is said to still haunt her old room 312.

However, there are some that wonder if her death was truly a suicide. The gun was found two steps above where her body was found. Most curiously, there is no record of gun powder on her hands or the entrance wound. Perhaps she haunts The Del not looking for her errant husband, but searching for her murderer.

WHALEY HOUSE

The Whaley House is touted by the Travel Channel as the most haunted house in America. The dynamic history of the Whaley House adds to its mystery.

Aside from being the home of Thomas and Anna Whaley and their children, the house was also once a courthouse where men were sentenced to and then met their deaths. "Yankee" Jim Robinson was hanged at the Whaley House and is buried at the nearby El Campo Santo Cemetery. However, it is said his footsteps still echo through the house. Matbe he is angry about his botched execution where he hung for a tormented 15 minutes before finally dying.

Thomas Whaley can't seem to leave his beloved home either. In one account, a museum worker caught the potent whiff of cigars. She searched the area, intent on asking the individual not to smoke near the museum entrance. Strangely, she couldn't find anyone. The next day, she mentioned the incident to a co-worker and was informed that Thomas had been terribly fond of cigars.

The Whaley House isn't the only building in Old Town San Diego reputed to be haunted. When you visit Old Town, be sure to drop by Casa de Estudillo where strange faces appear in mirrors and El Fandango Restaurant where the cloudy apparition of a female sometimes dines.

So what are you waiting for? Visit San Diego and let its inhabitants - both past and present - show you their beloved city!

The Walt Disney World complex is immense and includes Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. Other Disney attractions include Downtown Disney and the nostalgic waterfront Boardwalk.

The average high temperature during Orlando's winter months is an inviting 72.9 degrees (Fahrenheit) with an average low of 51.3 degrees. However, if a cold front happens to swing through, you may see one or two days of upper 50s to mid-60s; so be sure to pack a sweater or light jacket.

Holiday festivities at Walt Disney World are filled with merriment and fun. Here is a brief rundown of just a few of the exciting things the magical theme park complex has to offer holiday vacationers:

Magic Kingdom
During the evening hours, park visitors are treated to a variety of holiday shows, fireworks and seasonal merriment. The entire park is decorated with a holiday theme, and amazing light shows dazzle the eye and touch the heart. Be sure to catch Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party where you'll hear holiday storytelling, live music, live appearances by Santa Goofy, and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Parade.

Epcot
Epcot's global theme is brought out with the world/candlelight processional. Hear a choir and orchestra with narrators telling the Christmas story. And of course, glimmering lights and Christmas trees abound.

Animal Kingdom
Don't miss Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade which combines the spirit of the holiday season with the deep jungle themes of Animal Kingdom. Take a stroll to Camp Minnie-Mickey and meet Disney characters in their colorful holiday costumes. Enjoy carolers, live entertainers, and holiday photo opportunities at Santa Goofy's Holiday Village.

Hollywood Studios
Get in on all the movie-making action at Disney's Hollywood Studios. During the holiday season, be sure to visit the Streets of America backlot area to witness the awe-inspiring Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights. No, not Ozzy Osborune; as legend has it, businessman Jennings Osborne strung up 1000 red lights for his six year-old daughter in Little Rock, Arkansas circa 1986. Every year, the display grew to such a ridiculous degree that once it reached three million lights, the neighbors slapped a lawsuit on him. But the entire episode was a blessing in disguise; for Osborne's entire display moved to Walt Disney World. Now everyone can be dazzled, amazed, and inspired by over five million sparkling lights strung on trees, buildings, rides, and more. Enjoy choreographed light shows with angels and some Florida "snow flurries."

Downtown Disney
Downtown Disney is Disney World's adult alternative. Window shop as you enjoy Disney's Festival of the Seasons where numerous colorful displays celebrate holiday traditions from different cultures. Take your picture with Santa. Enjoy choirs, strolling musicians, and Tin Soldier stilt walkers. Walk under sparkling lights, enjoy festive holiday decorations, and stroll under enchanting trees. For adults 21 and over, celebrate New Year's Eve at Pleasure Island where you can enjoy live music, dancing, fine dining, drinks, and pirate parties (argh!)

From someone who honeymooned in Walt Disney World during the holiday season, I would return every year if it were possible. The warm weather, friendly crowds, and around-the-clock fun atmosphere of Disney's theme parks during the holidays is truly magical.

Or, maybe you did, but it wasn't fun for the kids? Maybe you didn't even bring the kids. Here's your chance to redeem the whole year: Christmas at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. You will again rise to the rank of family hero.

Don't pack too heavily, since November and December usually stay in the mid 70's to 80's. Swimsuits and shorts--and be sure to save suitcase room for a few gifts and souvenirs to bring back!

Disney World is the epitome of holiday magic. A huge Christmas tree greets visitors on Main St. Each evening, Mickey Mouse hosts a tree lighting ceremony (and somehow teleports himself to get ready for the parade). Santa and Mrs. Claus are on hand for a meet and greet while holiday music fills the air. Wait, take a deep breath.smell the cinnamon and gingerbread? (Leave it to Disney to pipe in some holiday scents while you spend the cents!)

Call ahead to get tickets to "Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party." This extra-ticketed event features special fireworks, an early preview of the "Very Merry Christmas Parade," stage shows like "Celebrate the Season," and the Fantasyland Pavilion Cotillion. There are also meet and greets of beloved Disney characters. This is an after-hours event and the rides stay open. Although it sounds like an added expense, remember two things: There will be fewer people than during the rush of the day, and you are trying to regain family hero status. Cost of the tickets: priceless. Besides, they serve hot chocolate, cookies, provide a family photo and make "snow", which is no small feat in 70-degree weather! One last piece of advice--tickets sell out pretty quickly, so don't tell the kids until you land the tickets for this special celebration (Call 407-W-DISNEY).

Once Disney cycles through all the dates for this party, then the rest of the public gets the grand fireworks show and the "Very Merry Christmas Parade". (Check the dates this parades starts as it changes from year to year). "The Holiday Wish" stage show features 200,000 lights that twinkle on turret and tower, granting Cinderella her wish for all to share.

Staying through Sunday and looking for a religious service? The Contemporary Resort's Fantasia Ballroom offers both Catholic and Protestant services. Call ahead for current details.

If you want to open gifts at home, and then go on vacation for New Year's Eve, no problem. Disney provides a special New Year's Eve fireworks celebration that wraps around the visitors 360 degrees. This is especially orchestrated to music (some of which is holiday themed).

Insider tips: Take the family on the monorail (you don't have to stay at a Disney property to ride). Get off at each of the Polynesian, Contemporary and Grand Floridian Hotels to see their life-size gingerbread creations. (Don't go hungry.) Also, ask for dinner packages that include character meet and greets (just in case you don't land the tickets mentioned above). Above all, buy a silly Christmas ornament with the year on it (as soon as you get there, because the holiday stuff sells fast). That way, no one can ever dispute the dream vacation was a reality, and you really were/are a hero!

The residents go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and every member of the family is sure to get that wonderful holiday spirit.

The mountains themselves are spectacular in winter. The hardwoods are bare, which makes the white pines and other evergreens really sparkle. At some of the higher elevations, you might even see a dusting of early snow glistening on a few peaks. All along the roadsides, you'll find stands selling pumpkins, Indian corn, apple cider, and Christmas trees. The air will be crisp, with daytime highs in the forties. At night, you might want to find a cozy hearth. The lows in winter are usually in the upper twenties.

Pigeon Forge throws a huge Christmas celebration, starting the first week in November and continuing through February. The town is decked with 5 million lights, and visitors can take a Christmas tour on the town trolley. All sorts of events are held within the city limits, including seasonal music and activities for children. Be sure to check out the live holiday shows at one of Pigeon Forge's famous theaters!

If you haven't finished your shopping yet, you've come to the right place. In addition to plenty of small local specialty shops, the Forge boasts the largest outlet mall in the world, and the after-Thanksgiving sales are legendary! Downtown and at the malls are Christmas shops that specialize in unique ornaments, stockings, trees, and other decorations that can be purchased.

Dollywood gets in on the action, too. The theme park cranks up its holiday celebration on November 8. You'll enjoy the local crafts, foods, decorations, and special Christmas musical shows. You'll get a real feel for what a Smoky Mountain Christmas really means!

Many restaurants in and near Pigeon Forge are open on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and they offer a wide variety of meals just for holiday diners. Several hotels, condos, and cabins have special package deals during the holidays, too.

While you're in the Smokies, make the drive to Biltmore House, America's largest home. Located in Asheville, North Carolina, this mansion is truly a fairytale castle at Christmas. Huge evergreens dot the front lawn, complete with thousands of twinkling lights. In the Winter Garden, graceful ballet dancers perform, and inside, visitors are taken on a candlelit tour to view the rare ornaments, fresh greenery, crackling fireplaces, and poinsettias that grace the splendid rooms. Choirs and carolers serenade with a host of tunes, including old European carols. A holiday visit to Biltmore House is an absolutely magical experience!
